If you are planning a Houston face lift or other cosmetic procedure in the near future, you may be wondering about the anesthesia that will be used during your surgery. Depending on the type of procedure, you may receive only local anesthesia or may be put under using general anesthesia. Your surgeon will provide you with the most accurate information on the type of anesthesia that will be used for your surgical procedure.
In some cases, local anesthetics may be used to block pain during a Houston breast lift or face lift procedure. These anesthetics are administered by using injections close to the site of the surgery. Patients under local anesthesia remain awake throughout the procedure and can typically respond to verbal questions and command. Only the areas surrounding the incision sites are numbed, which can sometimes lead to discomfort or unpleasant sensations during the surgical procedure. If local anesthesia is not adequate to provide sufficient relief, other anesthesia options for cosmetic surgery procedures are available.
Twilight Sleep Anesthesia
The anesthetics used to induce twilight sleep are usually administered through an IV line. Patients using this form of anesthesia are not put into a state of unconsciousness. Instead, they may doze off or remain awake during surgery. Twilight sleep anesthesia allows patients to respond to simple commands without experiencing pain or stress during their surgical procedure. This could allow procedures to be completed more quickly and accurately in some cases.
Like twilight sleep anesthesia, the drugs used to induce general anesthesia are most often delivered through an IV. The anesthesiologist will often ask patients to count backwards from 100 while these medications are being administered. This serves two purposes:
- Reducing stress for patients by distracting them
- Allowing the anesthesiologist to pinpoint when the drugs have taken effect
General anesthesia renders the patient unconscious and prevents movement. It also blocks pain, ensuring that the patient remains still and quiet throughout the procedure. Patients typically do not remember anything about the procedure and may be disoriented and shaky during the recovery period. This is why your cosmetic surgeon will usually recommend against driving yourself home or returning to work immediately after a procedure in which twilight sleep or general anesthesia was applied.
