Hundreds of thousands of American women get breast implants every year, and many of them are expected to start getting gummy bear implants as opposed to other types for a number of reasons. These will include many women looking for Houston breast augmentation. Although gummy bear implants have been used by European women since 1995 and Canadian women since 2000, they were only recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in the United States.
Dr. Grant Stevens was the first to refer to this type of augmentation as “gummy bear,” which he did due to how similar these silicone implants are to gummy bears as the substance remains solid and intact when cut. This differs from previous types of silicone and, of course, saline that have been used for many ladies looking for a Houston breast lift. Those substances are much more apt to leak and cause folds, ripples or wrinkles.
Gummy bear implants also help the breasts maintain their shape and appear more natural and upright as many report that breasts augmented by this substance simply feel and look more natural than those that have other types of substances augmenting their size. In fact, many women are often surprised when told of their existence. Also, women who receive these types of implants often report that they do not feel them inside their breasts nearly as often as women with other types of implants. This type of substance will also not change in form over the years as much as is usually the case when other materials are used.
For years, Americans who wanted to get these high-strength silicone gel breast implants had to take part in a clinical trial – multiple trials have been offered in the United States since 2002 – or head across the border to a country that offered them. However, these trials have resulted in the FDA becoming comfortable enough with their safety to approve them for use by the general public in the United States.
A silicone gel-filled breast implant that is manufactured by Sientra was approved for use in the United States by the FDA in March 2012 while the similar Natrelle 410 Highly Cohesive Anatomically Shaped Silicone-Gel Filled Breast Implant received approval from that organization 11 months later after both types have been used by women overseas for decades. The first study took three years to complete, and 1,788 women took part in it while the second one was seven years long, and 941 women were involved. The FDA is requesting that these organizations continue to conduct studies over the next several years so that any long-term effects can be analyzed.
All women at least 22 years old and women of all ages who are in the process of a breast reconstruction after having experienced cancer are eligible to receive gummy bear breast implants. As with all breast implants, these are not designed to be used for a lifetime, and further surgery will be necessary at some point down the line. Although the time frame is usually shorter, some women have reported not needing further surgery until 20-30 years after receiving their implants.
Of course, some women will determine that saline or other types of silicone will be best for them, but it can only be a good thing that more choices are now available in the United States than had been the case previously. However, with the increase in Houston face lift procedures, the number of women electing to get gummy bear implants is expected to rise significantly in the coming years as more of them discover the benefits that they offer.
