Plastic Surgery and Minors

Last week, we spent some time talking about the need to regulate the cosmetic surgery industry in America.   However, the problems we have pale in comparison to the way the cosmetic surgery industry is regulated in China.   There, 10-20% of all people getting plastic surgery are minors. In America, when a minor sees a plastic surgeon and goes under the knife, it becomes national news and a hot button discussion topic.  Even more shocking, in China minors can get plastic surgery without needing the consent of a parent or legal guardian.  Wrap your head around that for a second.

Luckily, at least one area of China is stepping up to fix this problem.   In the city of Guangzhou, they have drafted a document that would ban local medical facilities from performing plastic surgery on a minor if the minor doesn’t get signed approval from a consenting adult.

While it’s nice to see a government increasing its efforts to regulate cosmetic surgery, we can’t help but feel like things never should have gotten to this point in China.  When you step back and think about it, it’s a bit ridiculous to envision a world where a teenager in Houston could get a face lift without needing signed approval from an adult.
