If you’re thinking about Houston breast augmentation, there are several things to keep in mind. We can help you determine whether you may be a good candidate for breast augmentation, as well as offer recommendations for your surgery, such as implant type and implant placement. Having a little bit of background knowledge before coming in for your consultation is always a plus, so I’ve compiled some general information about some of the options for breast augmentation.
What to Expect During Your Houston Breast Augmentation Consultation
The first step toward enhancing your breasts is scheduling a consultation. This is an appointment to talk with me and discuss your options. During a consultation, we will look at your medical history to learn more about your overall health. In addition, we’ll discuss your goals and expectations as well as recommendations for your procedure. In most cases, we will also conduct a physical exam of your breasts.
If you’re a good candidate for Houston breast augmentation, then we will discuss the different options for your procedure, the details of the procedure, as well as the risks and benefits of surgery. In addition, I’ll give you information about the typical recovery so you understand what steps you would need to take after surgery. I’ll also answer any questions you have about breast augmentation, my practice, or anything else related to your surgery. All this helps you get a good understanding of your options so you can decide if you want to move forward with the procedure.
Who is a Good Candidate for Houston Breast Augmentation?
During your consultation, we’ll also discuss whether you are a good candidate for Houston breast augmentation. It’s important to understand that this procedure isn’t right for everyone. You should be in good physical health before any Houston cosmetic surgery to help reduce risks of complications during or after surgery. For example, you shouldn’t have any current infections or untreated medical conditions. In addition, smoking can increase your risk for many complications and may make healing more difficult, so you should be a non-smoker. If you do have current health concerns, we can discuss them and determine if there are steps you can take to become a good candidate for breast augmentation.
Also, you should be in a good state of mind and have realistic expectations for surgery. While Houston breast augmentation is quite safe, there are risks involved. Therefore, we want you to make an informed decision. Emotional instability or recent major life changes can make this more difficult. In addition, having realistic goals and expectations for your procedure is necessary. Breast augmentation has its limits on how drastic of a difference it can make. This is often based on your body type, breast tissue, and other factors of your procedure. Therefore, we will talk to you about some realistic goals about size, shape, and other information about your procedure. It’s also important to note that breast surgery can help you feel more confident when you have realistic expectations.
In addition, some other elements may make you ineligible for breast augmentation. For example, if you’re are currently pregnant or breast feeding, you may not be a good candidate for this procedure. In addition, if you have breast cancer or an abnormal mammogram, we don’t recommend breast augmentation. Also, the FDA recommends that you be 18 years or older for breast augmentation with saline implants and 22 years or older for silicone implants. We’ll discuss these things with you to determine if you’re a good candidate for surgery.
Types of Breast Implants
Breast implants are inserted to enhance breast size, shape, or symmetry. In addition to different sizes, there are also many types of breast implants you might choose for your Houston cosmetic surgery. Often, this depends on personal preference, body type, and desired results. There are pros and cons to each type of implant, so we’ll discuss recommendations for your specific circumstances. However, it’s helpful to keep some general information in mind about different types of breast implants.
Smooth vs. Textured Implants
The outer shells of breast implants are made of silicone, which can be smooth or textured. Smooth implants generally feature a thinner shell and are smooth to the touch. This may help them feel softer and move more freely. However, they may carry a higher risk for capsular contracture. Capsular contracture occurs when scar tissue forms around the implant, which can cause your implants to feel hard. In extreme cases, this may also cause breast pain.
By contrast, textured implants may help reduce the rate of capsular contracture. These implants offer a textured silicone shell, which is often thicker than smooth implants. Houston breast augmentation with textured implants may feel somewhat firmer than smooth implants. However, they may adhere better to your breast tissue, which can help reduce implant movement and rotation.
In addition, there are different shapes of implants which you may choose for your Houston breast augmentation. The two main breast implant shapes are round and teardrop. Round implants generally offer plenty of cleavage after augmentation, depending on the size you choose. They also generally provide more fullness at the top of the breasts. Round implants can be smooth or textured, as the implant is symmetrical. Therefore, round implants can rotate without affecting breast shape.
By contrast, many patients choose teardrop implants because they believe they look more natural. Teardrop breast implants are narrower at the top and fuller at the bottom, leaving less volume at the top and more at the bottom. However, because these implants are not symmetrical on top and bottom like round implants, they are generally textured instead of smooth to help prevent rotation.
Saline breast implants are filled with sterile saline solution to mimic breast tissue. While these implants can come pre-filled, most of the time we insert them empty and fill them with saline during your Houston breast augmentation procedure. Therefore, saline implants may offer smaller incisions for your augmentation. In addition, they are generally less expensive than silicone implants.
However, some feel that saline implants feel more firm than natural breast tissue. In addition, saline has the consistency of water, which may affect the feel of your breasts. This can lead to the potential for rippling, which is when the sides of your breast implants are visible through the skin.
By contrast, silicone implants use a silicone filling, which has a consistency more similar to natural breast tissue. Many patients choose these types of implants for their Houston breast augmentation when looking for a more natural feel and contour. Also, they generally carry less risk of rippling.
However, there are some disadvantages of choosing silicone breast implants. For example, they usually cost a little more than saline implants. Also, the risk of implant rupture is slightly higher with silicone implants. When saline implants leak, most people can tell almost immediately. Silicone implants may not show these quick signs of a leak. Therefore, we often recommend follow up MRIs every few years to check for leaks with silicone implants. Nonetheless, both silicone and saline implants are quite safe and FDA-approved.
Houston Breast Augmentation Implant Placement
In addition to implant type and size, there are also different ways to place your implants during Houston breast augmentation surgery. Breast implant placement depends on many factors, such as your body type, the size and shape of implants, and how much breast tissue you have. We will discuss the different placements with you and offer recommendations based on your individual circumstances as well as your desired results.
Implants can be placed either over or under the pectoral muscle, which covers the upper chest. Subglandular placement refers to placing the implant over the muscle, while subpectoral means placing the implant under the muscle. There are also pros and cons to each of these implant placement options.
Subglandular placement is often easier to perform during the procedure. Often, this means less discomfort directly after Houston cosmetic surgery. Also, subglandular placement typically means less implant movement during physical activity like exercising. However, this type of placement can increase the risk of capsular contracture and mammogram inaccuracy after Houston breast augmentation. In addition, there may be more risk for implant visibility and rippling with this type of placement if you have less natural breast tissue.
On the other hand, subpectoral placement can help reduce the risk of capsular contracture and may offer more accurate mammograms in future. In addition, many patients prefer this placement because it can help camouflage the implants for a more natural look. However, most patients experience more discomfort during Houston breast augmentation recovery after subpectoral placement and may also notice the implants move when they contract their pectoral muscles.
Preparing for Houston Cosmetic Surgery and Houston Breast Augmentation Recovery
Once you’ve decided to have Houston breast augmentation surgery, there are a few things you can do to help prepare for operation day as well as your recovery. For example, enlist the help of your friends and family. Breast augmentation is done under general anesthesia, so you will need someone to drive you to and from our surgical center. In addition, you will need someone around to watch you for 24-48 hours after surgery as the effects of anesthesia start to wear off. You may also want friends and family over to help with childcare, cooking, and other activities, as you will need plenty of rest and won’t be able to lift heavy items after surgery.
Also, we recommend preparing your home for an easier breast augmentation recovery period. For instance, bring all your necessities down to about waist level so you don’t have to reach up to get what you need. You may also want to prepare a comfortable resting place. This resting place should allow you to lie on your back with your head and shoulders slightly elevated. This is how we recommend you sleep for several weeks after Houston breast augmentation. You may also want a table nearby with books, magazines, television remotes, or anything else that may help you relax as you recover. These few steps can help you prepare for your post-operative healing process.
